GMO, Pesticides, Obesity, Calorie counting, Food Labeling etc

The hot topic now is nutritional labeling. Michelle Obama is concerned about obesity. That is her mission as first lady. Others are concerned about GMO- genetically modified foods, pesticides, and labeling showing those ingredients. I think BOTH should be part of labeling. Why include one and not the other. We have a right to know about everything that is in our foods.

This brings up another issue- When you eat out to eat, whether its a fast food chain or a favorite restaurant. Do you REALLY know what is in the food you eat. Many celiac patients feel they order gluten free ingredients, yet cross contamination at restaurants can cause some of their symptoms to persist.

Be your own advocate- get all the information- ask questions.

When you buy fresh produce- organic or not- Do you know what you are getting.

With all the chemicals and pesticides out there, and genetically modified foods, and artificial ingredients. We need to be better informed consumers before we make our health decisions.

We need sugar labeling and amount of simple sugars on the labels so people who are diabetic or are trying to avoid diabetes can also make informed decisions

We also need fiber labeling- so people can choose high fiber diets and decrease the risk of colon cancer.

Gardening indoors using Hydroponics

I started hydroponic gardening a couple of weeks ago. It is a soilless way to garden. You can grow herbs, flowers, vegetables etc. So far, I planted two pepper plants, two tomato plants, one eggplant. For herbs, I planted basil, rosemary, thyme, sage, chives, parsley. There are three sets of grow ( full spectrum or aquarium lights) above the units. I purchased three black troughs from home depot, and used existing circulation pumps to move the water. The plants are suspended in the nutrient solution without soil. They are kept in place by the use of stones and or pebbles. The nutrient solution is a complete solution with all the ingredients a plant needs to grow including micronutrients and trace elements. The basil looks great. I am also using the unit to feed my begonias as well. More details to follow. There are no use of pesticides and it is fully organic. I use these herbs when cooking and harvest them fresh from the hydroponic unit. They are all gluten free, natural and some of the herbs are used in homeopathy and integrative medicine for healing such as the peppermint plant. Peppermint is known to be soothing to the stomach. One can take a few leaves and add it to tea.

This is my own home made unit- cost about $100

Healthy Snack for you and your family

Healthy Snack for you and your family

What is a healthy snack? Is it a fruit juice in a paper carton? I think NOT. What about a cookie–nnnnnoooo.
To me, a physician Nutrition Specialist, a healthy snack is a fresh fruit, such as an apple, an orange, a banana. Loaded with fiber, nutrients, unaltered and hopefully, no genetically altered materials.
